Liverpool Makes A Comeback Against Barcelona

Jurgen Klopp made a hint that Liverpool was unable to pull off a miracle win against Barcelona in the Champions League. He admitted on Monday that a beautiful failure was probably the best the Red could hope for when facing the La Liga champions.

Jurgen Klopp needs to have more faith in his team going forward. His players have managed to prove that they are capable of just about anything. However, nothing can come close to a 4-0 victory against Barcelona when all the odds were significantly stacked against them.

Liverpool vs Barcelona

Trailing by three goals after the first leg of the Champions League that took place at Camp Nou, where Lionel Messi destroyed Liverpool and Luis Suarez, the Reds and Jurgen Klopp had the slightest of hopes at Anfield for the second leg. To make matters worse, both Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah were absent from the second leg.

However, this is Anfield, and this is Liverpool, and all the fairy tales and myths that surround this place came to life in an unforgettable evening of fearless and pulsating football. Barcelona, the Spanish giants, were ruthlessly defeated by two goals from Georginio Wijnaldum as a makeshift striker along with an additional two goals from Divock Origi who is someone that was on loan this time last year at Wolfsburg.

This was undoubtedly Liverpool’s evening, and no one can deny that. It was considered the comeback of the ages that managed to top any other historic event this football ground has seen before. Barcelona played their part that could be regarded as their worst nightmare in the history of the club.

Barcelona was supposed to learn from their mistakes during the quarterfinal meltdown of last season in Rome where they suffered a 3-0 defeat to get knocked out. However, this game was far worse as Barcelona collapsed. Maybe Barcelona was under the impression that they already had the game in the bag and merely needed to defend? Perhaps they were too arrogant or too complacent? Well, Liverpool took the opportunity the punish them mercilessly.

Liverpool Goals

Liverpool’s first goal was scored during the 7th minute when Jordi Alba made a massive mistake to give the ball to Sadio Mane. He provided the ball to Henderson who shot for goal only to be stopped by the glove of Stegen, landing perfectly for Origi to put it in the net. This was the only goal scored during the first half. The remaining three goals from Liverpool all took place during the second half.

Wijnaldum replaced Henderson, and the moment he arrived on the pitch, everything changed. He managed to score in the space of 2 minutes, one goal during the 54th minute and another during the 56th minute. The final goal came from Origi during the 79th minute to secure Liverpool’s place in the Champions League final that will take place on 1 June 2019 against Ajax or Tottenham Hotspur.
